Box Score
COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – The Bethel University men's soccer team traveled to Saint John's University for a mid-day matchup with the Johnnies and fell by a 4-1 score. In a wide open, free flowing game the Royals came out strong and controlled the majority of possession in the first half and were tied 1-1 at the half. Saint John's scored three second period goals however to pull away and earn the three points in the MIAC standings.
Saint John's scored the first goal twelve minutes into the game before
Ryan Ness scored the equalizer for Bethel seven minutes later. Senior
Kolten Fischer assisted Ness on the goal. Ness nearly scored again with a shot deep in the box but the Johnnies goalkeeper made a huge save to keep Bethel from taking the lead. Royals keeper Christ Scott made several big saves of his own to keep the game tied as both keepers had a busy day. Saint John's outshot Bethel 26-24 with 15-14 shots on goal advantage. Scott made 11 saves while SJU's keeper made 13 stops.
The Johnnies scored the eventual game winner at the 72:26 mark. Bethel tried to press for the equalizer and were caught on the counter attack twice by the Johnnies over the next 16 minutes for the final 4-1 score.
"The score line is definitely not indicative of the game," Royals head coach
Jeremy Iwaszkowiec said. "It was a fun attacking game with both teams creating quality chances. I feel badly for the guys who are exerting so much energy and effort and still coming up short. We continue to concede some soft goals and are inconsistent in big moments. However, we are playing some very fun soccer and I am proud of our efforts. The trajectory of the program is fantastic and we have to keep a positive attitude."
The Royals will hit the road again as they travel to Wartbug College in Waverly, Iowa for a Sunday afternoon matchup with the Knights. The match will kick-off at 3 p.m. with live video available
