ARDEN HILLS, Minn. – Despite holding St. Olaf scoreless for 13 minutes in the first half, Bethel fell to the Oles at home Saturday 46-34. The Royals'
Sydney Schultz (Fr., Dalton, Minn.) was single handedly controlling the game early on as the freshman cashed in on five first half 3-pointers to help Bethel go into the intermission break with a 20-12 advantage.
Schultz and the rest of the BU offense attempted to keep its lead throughout the second half, as the Dalton, Minn., native rattled in two more 3-balls, but it wasn't enough as the Oles went on a 17-5 run to start the second period and never looked back. Schultz's day will go down in history, however, as her seven shots from downtown passed the all-time record of six 3-pointers in a single game set by three previous players, including Kristin Lundeen, JoLynn Thielke, and
Taylor Sheley.
As a team, Bethel finished the game shooting 10-of-35 from the outside (28.6 percent), while holding its opponent to 1-of-19 shooting from long range. Neither team shot well from the floor, but where the Oles garnered its biggest advantage came in the paint—outscoring the Royals 32-2 around the rim. Bethel did claim an 11-7 advantage in second-chance points, but St. Olaf proved to be too much down the stretch as it held BU scoreless in the last seven minutes and scored 12 unanswered points.
Schultz finished as the game's leading scorer, finishing with 21 points. Meanwhile
Kelly Swenson (Sr., Dawson, Minn.) finished a productive day with 15 rebounds.
The Royals continue to look for its first MIAC win of the season, but it will not get easier, as Bethel travels to St. Thomas Monday night to take on the Tommies in a road contest.
