ARDEN HILLS, Minn. – It's opening weekend for the Bethel University football squad this Saturday, as the Royals travel to Waverly, Iowa to take on Wartburg College in its first matchup of the 2012 campaign. BU will take on the Knights in a rematch of the opening round of the 2010 NCAA Division III Playoffs at 1 p.m. at Walston-Hoover Stadium.
The Royals, who remain a Top 25 team, despite not playing last week, will be tested for the first time in 2012. Wartburg throttled MacMurray College last week 73-0 at home and hope to build a win-streak after this weekend's competition.
The last time these two teams met, Bethel captured a 28-20 win in Waverly behind the powerful running attack of Logan Flannery and
Josh Aakre. BU will look to see a similar attack excel as
Brandon Marquardt (So., Champlin, Minn.) and
Jesse Phenow (Jr., Richfield, Minn.) spearhead the Bethel backfield.
Erik Peterson (So., Orono, Minn.) will get his first official start at quarterback for the Royals, taking the place of the graduated four-year starter,
Josh Aakre.
