St. Paul, Minn. – The women's soccer teams from Bethel University and Hamline University fought to a 1-1 draw Saturday afternoon on the campus of Hamline. The Pipers entered the game 4-1 while the Royals were 2-3 with both teams looking to rebound after Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) opening setbacks Tuesday.

The Pipers struck first in the match scoring a goal just nine minutes in after a steal. The Royals were able to tie the game up late in the second period at the 78:05 mark when Suzette Anderson (Jr., Lino Lakes, Minn.) pounded one in 35' out from the right side. Both teams had several good scoring opportunities down the stretch and in the two overtime periods but neither were able to find the back of the net, resulting in the tie. Freshman goalkeeper Kathryn McGaffey entered the game 13 minutes in for the Royals and made five saves during the second period. The Royals outshot Hamline 19-13 on the game. The Pipers did not get a shot on goal in the two overtime periods.

The Royals will be in action Sunday afternoon as they travel to face the University of Wisconsin-River Falls in a non-conference matchup at 3 p.m. They will play again in Wisconsin Wednesday evening when they face off with UW-Stout. The next MIAC and home match for the Royals is next Saturday when they host St. Mary's at 1 p.m.
