NORTHFIELD, Minn. - Coming off a 1-0 victory over the first place Carleton Knights last weekend, the Royals extended its winning streak to two games by defeating St. Olaf 1-0 on Tuesday afternoon at Rolf Mellby Field. The "W" over the third place team gives BU an overall record of 9-6-2 (4-5-0 MIAC), and gives Bethel an opportunity to finish .500 in conference play; a feat that has only been accomplished one other time since 2004.
David Kim (Jr., Blaine, Minn.) tallied his ninth goal of the season and the only goal on the afternoon at the 14-minute mark, as he and the Royals benefited from a free kick.
Martin Manocchio (So., Austin, Minn.) was the only other BU player to shoot a shot-on-goal.
The remaining 75 minutes were dominated by
Leif Sundberg (Sr., Mahtomedi, Minn.) and the Bethel defense, as Sundberg defended the net exceptionally. The senior keeper posted 16 saves throughout the 90 minutes of regulation.
"I want to give credit to a very good St. Olaf team. They were a quality opponent and a bit unlucky on the day," said Head Coach
Jeremy Iwaszkowiec. "However, I am thrilled with the passion and guts that our boys showed.
David Kim scored a brilliant free kick and played tough through an ankle injury.
Leif Sundberg played his best game of the season in goal, and our overall team defense was again very good. I am very excited for the guys and proud of the steps they have taken this fall."
This is the second year Bethel has won at least four MIAC games since 2004, and the squad will look to add one more win Saturday as the Royals welcome the University of St. Thomas to Ona Orth Stadium at 3:30 p.m. Live stats and video will available.
