ARDEN HILLS, Minn. - Bethel University shocked the Carleton Knights today by a score of 1-0. The Knights were previously undefeated in conference play, but a goal from
Micah Schedler (Sr., Fon du Lac, Wis.) from
Martin Manocchio (So., Austin, Minn.) in the 64th minute was difference in the game.
Carleton entered the game with a 10-3-2 (6-0-1 MIAC) record and ranked #5 in the North Region. However, they soon found that the Royals would be no easy pushover. Bethel out-shot Carleton in both halves and by a 13-7 margin for the game. Furthermore, Bethel's defense did not allow Carleton to get a shot on goal the entire second half, making the job for goalkeeper
Leif Sundberg (Sr., Mahtomedi, Minn.) that much easier. Sundberg notched his fifth shutout of the season today, and seventh of his career.
"This was a very fun collegiate soccer match. Both teams had multiple chances as the action was back and forth," said Head Coach
Jeremy Iwaszkowiec. "Our team defense did a fantastic job of setting the tone early. I am very proud of the overall effort and thrilled for the guys as they continue to learn what it means to trust one another and work hard for each other."
The win elevates Bethel to a record of 3-5 in MIAC play, and 8-6-2 overall, guaranteeing the team at least a .500 or better win percentage for the second time in the last three seasons. The Royals are scheduled to take on St. Olaf on the road next Tuesday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. for their second to last game of the season.
Notes: - Today's win is the first for Bethel over Carleton since 2004, the last time the Royals made the conference playoffs.
- Schedler's goal was the first of his collegiate career.
