ARDEN HILLS, Minn. - Bringing home their sixth win in the last 10 games, the Royals defeated the Saint Mary's University Cardinals 58-45 at the Robertson Center this afternoon.
Taylor Sheley (So., Backus, Minn.) led the Royals today with 16 points, followed by
Kristi Nye (So., Nashville, Tenn.) with 14 points.
With both teams scoring low points in field goals, the Royals capitalized late in the first half by making nine of their 15 free throws. With 4:20 left in the half, and the game tied at 15-15, Bethel created more pressure on the Cardinal's offense, keeping Saint Mary's shooting to 20%. The Royals gained eight points and ended the half 23-15.
The second half saw an increase in both team's shooting, yet the Royals never gave the Cardinals an inch to recover their gain from early in the game. With help from the defense, the Royals out-rebounded the Cardinals, 11-6.
Shana Grejtak (Jr., Franklin, Minn.) led the Royals with nine rebounds and added six steals. In the end, Cardinal turnovers gave the game to the Royals. Saint Mary's had 17 to Bethel's 10.
Other leaders in the game were
Kristen Wolters (Sr., St. Cloud, Minn.) with seven rebounds and seven points,
Scotti Moats (Fr., Waconia, Minn.) scored five points and had five rebounds.
Jess Miller led the Cardinals with 16 points, while Jessica Thone posted a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds.
With today's win, the Royals improve to 6-10 overall, 5-8 in MIAC play while the Cardinals fall to 4-12 overall and 3-10 in MIAC play. The Royals' next game is scheduled this Wednesday for a 7:30 p.m. date with the Macalester College Scots.
