ARDEN HILLS, Minn. - Bethel is off to its best start since the 1997 season after defeating the Bethany Lutheran Vikings by a score of 2-1 today at home. The Royals are now 4-1 early in the season, which equals their win total from just two years ago. "We've come along way since then," said Head Coach Pepe Jon Chavez. "Our guys are competitors, and we showed that today," he continued.
Andreas Scott (Jr., Cedar, Minn.) put Bethel up 1-0 at the 11:37 mark of the first half, assisted by
Zach Hurd (Jr., Portage, Mich.). However, less than a minute later, the Vikings evened the score with an unassisted goal by Joe Nuah.
Almost an hour of game time went by before another goal was scored. With just under nine minutes remaining, Scott found the back of the net again, this time with the help of
David Swenson (Jr., Ham Lake, Minn.), who has now had a hand (or foot, as is the case in soccer) in each of Bethel's four game-winning goals. The Royals defense held off several attacks from the Vikings.
Nick Kantor (Sr., Buffalo, Minn.) surrendered just one goal, while making six saves.
The loss drops Bethany Lutheran to 1-4 on their season. The Royals are scheduled to begin conference play next Tuesday when they travel to Winona, Minn., to take on the Saint Mary's Cardinals in a 7 p.m. game.
