ROSEVILLE, MINN.—The Bethel University women's volleyball team defeated Lawrence 3-1, and dropped a 3-0 decision to Northwestern (Minn.) on day one of the Kathryne Pals Legacy Invitational on Friday, hosted by UNW.
The Royals move to 3-1 following the split.
Bethel 3, Lawrence 1 (25-27, 26-24, 25-15, 25-20)
Both teams combined for 111 kills. The Royals had the slight upper hand by a 57-54 margin, hit .220 in the match, and forced a whopping 36 combined errors on the Vikings.Â
Bethel got double digit kills from four individuals, led by 13 apiece from Hannah Penke and Sara Scherber. Penke added three aces and 12 digs to her stat line. Coming through with a team-leading .324 hitting percentage on just two attack errors was Scherber.
Peyton Howie added 11 kills, while Grace Bathurst had 10 kills and was a force at the net for seven blocks, three of which were solo. Grace Therrien led the way with 30 digs and three aces.Â
Ellie Van Namen prevailed with 23 assists, followed by 22 from Sophia Rubio.
Northwestern (Minn.) 3, Bethel 0 (25-20, 25-16, 25-13)
The Eagles hit the ball on the screws from start-to-finish as they accumulated a .464 hitting percentage on just five attack errors en route to a three-set win. This included a third set that saw them hit .696, which consisted of 17 kills and just one attack error.Â
Hannah Penke paced Bethel with nine kills and nine digs. Sara Scherber paced the Royals with a .400 attack percentage that consisted of seven kills and just one attack error, which engineered a team that finished with a .111 mark. Sophia Rubio had 12 assists for Bethel.
Northwestern got 14 kills and six digs from Ana Egge, while Miranda Wyatt had 10 kills, just one attack error and a .643 percentage. Norah Jaeb's .692 mark included nine kills and zero errors.
The Royals will face UW-Platteville on day two of the tournament on Saturday, September 6 at 1 p.m.
