BLAINE, Minn. — The Bethel University Women's Hockey team showed resilience and composure Friday night, rallying for a 2–1 overtime victory over MIAC opponent Concordia at the Bethel University Arena.
The Royals found themselves trailing early after Concordia capitalized on a power-play opportunity midway through the first period. Despite the early deficit, Bethel responded with steady defensive play and growing offensive pressure. The Royals created several quality chances late in the opening frame but entered the intermission down 1–0.
Bethel tightened up in the second period, limiting high-danger opportunities while continuing to establish possession in the offensive zone. The Royals' defensive unit and backchecking forwards worked together to keep the game within reach, setting the stage for a strong push in the final period.
That push came in the third. With just over six minutes remaining in regulation, freshman Rylen Kissell delivered the equalizer, finishing off a well-executed sequence assisted by Sophie Martin and Olivia Martin. The goal energized the home crowd and shifted the momentum firmly in Bethel's favor as the Royals pressed for the go-ahead score.
After regulation ended in a 1–1 deadlock, overtime required little time to decide the outcome. Just 3:21 into the extra session, senior Beth Vincent (Velasco) capitalized on an opportunity in transition, scoring unassisted to secure the 2–1 victory for the Royals.
Between the pipes, senior Ashley Gustafson (Hess) turned in a strong performance, stopping 25 shots and delivering key saves late in regulation to keep Bethel within striking distance. The Royals' defensive corps blocked shots and cleared traffic in front, allowing Gustafson Hess to see the puck cleanly in critical moments.
The comeback victory highlights Bethel's persistence and ability to respond under pressure as the Royals continue MIAC play. Bethel will look to carry the momentum into tomorrow to finish the series at home against Concordia Moorhead at 2pm.
