Blake Schmitz's Big Day Powers Royals Past Knights

ARDEN HILLS, MINN.—The Bethel University men's basketball team's big second half, as well as Blake Schmitz's 36 points powered them to a 93-81 victory over Carleton at the Robertson Center Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon. 

The upset moves Bethel to 6-7, 3-2 MIAC, while the Knights fall to 8-7 4-2 MIAC.

All 16 of the game's lead changes occurred in the first half, where Blake Schmitz's three-pointer in the closing seconds put the Royals in front for good at 42-41. Schmitz carried that momentum into the second half, where he netted 22 points on 7-of-9 shooting. His performance engineered a Bethel squad that shot .621 (18-of-29) in the second half, where they never surrendered the lead en route to a 93-81 victory.

Bethel finished the game with a season-high 93 points, eight steals, and 13 three-point baskets.

Schmitz carried the Royals on his shoulders with 36 points on 12-of-15 shooting, 3-of-5 from three-point land, and 9-of-13 from the charity stripe. He also had five steals, and four assists.

Nick Burke and Jay Neubert each had 15 points, followed by 11 from Jack Charbonneau

Bethel shot .576 (34-of-59) from the floor and .433 (13-of-30) from the three-point line. The Royals committed just seven turnovers in the contest.

Carleton finished with a .534 (31-of-58) mark from the field. Matt Drake had 21 points for the Knights, while Sam Koelling had 18.

Bethel will host St. Olaf at Robertson Center Gymnasium on Wednesday, January 14 at 7 p.m.
