Women’s Hockey Playoff Hopes Fade with 5-3 loss at Concordia

MOORHEAD, Minn. – Two late goals weren't enough to propel the Bethel women's hockey team to victory over Concordia, falling 5-3 to the Cobbers.

The loss drops the Royals out of postseason contention as they now sit 10 points back of the last playoff spot heading into the final weekend of play.

How It Happened:
• Just as they had the night before, the Cobbers jumped out to an early lead over the Royals, scoring just two minutes into the first period. They tacked on a second goal at 3:01 in the second before the Royals could respond with a score of their own.
• Right before the eight-minute mark of the second period, Brynn Swenson broke the puck out of the Royals' defensive zone and skated it the length of the ice. She took on the Cobber goalie and snuck the puck past her pads for the Royals' first goal of the game at 7:44.
• The Cobbers came back with two more goals at 12:34 and 15:30, increasing the gap to 4-1, Cobbers, heading into the third period.
• Just 48 seconds into the third, the Cobbers added a fifth goal on a power-play opportunity, widening their lead even moreso.
Julia Helget helped close the gap at 14:54 in the third period, slamming the puck into the back of the Cobber net on a one-timer.
• Two minutes later, a power-play opportunity and opting to pull goaltender Ashley Gustafson gave the Royals a 6-on-4 situation. Brynn Swenson fired the puck through traffic from just inside the zone and into the back of the net to make it 5-3, Cobbers, with just over three minutes remaining.

What's Next:
The Royals head down to Northfield, Minn., next Friday, Feb. 21, for their final series of the season as they take on St. Olaf. Puck drop is set for 6 p.m. at the St. Olaf Ice Arena.
