Royals Sweep Hamline in Straight Sets Ahead of Alumni Reunion Day

ST. PAUL, Minn. — The Bethel University volleyball team picked up another key MIAC victory Friday evening, defeating Hamline University in straight sets (25–23, 25–23, 25–23) at Hutton Fieldhouse. The tightly contested match showcased Bethel's depth and poise under pressure as the Royals edged the Pipers in each frame to improve to 11–8 overall and 4–2 in MIAC play.

Bethel's offense was powered by Peyton Howie, who led the way with 13 kills, while Hannah Penke added nine and Eleanor Pelzel chipped in seven. Setter Sophia Rubio directed the attack with 33 assists, keeping the Royals balanced and efficient as they hit .209 on the night compared to Hamline's .118.

The Royals' defense was equally sharp. Grace Therrien posted a team-high 17 digs, with Penke (15) and Lauren Hetfeld (11) joining her in double figures to help Bethel win the battle on the back line. At the net, Howie, Sara Scherber, and Chiara Houser each recorded a block, slowing Hamline's hitters and helping the Royals close out each set by the slimmest of margins.

After trading points deep into every frame, Bethel's composure shined in key moments — particularly late in the third set when timely kills from Howie and a final push from Rubio's service run sealed the sweep.

The Royals now return home for a special night in the Robertson Center as they host Macalester College on Saturday at 7 p.m. for Bethel Volleyball's Alumni and Reunion Day. The evening will celebrate former Royals who helped build the program's tradition of excellence while connecting past and present players for a night honoring Bethel volleyball's legacy.

With playoff positioning on the line and the gym expected to be packed with familiar faces, it promises to be an electric atmosphere in Arden Hills.
