ST. PETER, Minn. – In a battle between the top two teams in the MIAC, the Bethel University men's hockey team couldn't hold on to its 3-1 lead, giving up three unanswered and falling to Gustavus Adolphus 4-3 in overtime.
The loss drops Bethel to 9-7-2 overall and 5-3-1 in MIAC play where they gained at least one point in the standings. They sit in a three-way tie for second with 16 points heading into Saturday.
Jack Brown broke the scoreless tie with nine minutes left in the second period. The goal came with 17 seconds left before a five-minute power play came to a close after the Gusties were whistled for a kneeing major.
Gustuavs evened it up five and a half minutes later before
Spencer Kring tallied his sixth of the year with 40 seconds left, sending BU into the locker room up 2-1.
Logan Anderson tallied his first of the season 2:26 into the third. The Royals skated with the two-goal lead until the Gusties went on the power play four minutes later. GAC only needed 59 seconds with the extra skater to get a goal back.
GAC then tied it all up at 3-3 on a rebound shot after netminder
Austin Ryman had made an initial save with a Gustie at his doorstep who then forced Ryman onto his back.
The Gusties took the extra point in the standings after scoring 1:34 into the 3-on-3 overtime period.
