NORTHFIELD, Minn. - The Bethel Royals opened up the 2025 season by winning 5 events at the St. Olaf Invitational highlighted by a program record in the pentathlon by Elle Thorson.
Thorson won the pentathlon by scoring 3,358 points, 31 points ahead of AnnaGrace Nelson's previous program record from last year. That point total places Thorson 7th on the Division III honor roll. She also set MIAC leading marks in the 60H (9.30) and high jump (1.59m / 5'2.5"). Ellie Hernes took 3rd place with a personal best score of 3,028 points, which ranks her 21st in Division III.
Abby Swenson started her year with two victories, one in the 200m dash (26.92), and one in the 4x400m relay (4:05.71). Swenson joined, Caitlyn Wrensien, Sarah Stellmach, and Hailey Gregg to hold off Bethel's other relay team, and are now ranked 20th in Division III.
Anna Speratos and Nora Wilhelm went 1-2 in the weight throw on Friday evening. Speratos took the victory with a throw of 14.31m / 46'11.5", while Wilhelm was 2nd with 14.13m / 46'4.25". Wilhelm also took 3rd place in the shot put with a throw of 11.50m / 37'1.25".
Shalom Sulungaine took charge of the 600m run and led from the gun to the tape, winning in a personal best and MIAC leading time of 1:37.48. Sulungaine also ran a terrific split of 57.24 in her leg of the 4x400m relay.
Hannah Kvant took 2nd place in the 200m dash, running 27.05. Emily Pearson was 3rd in the pole vault clearing 3.20m / 10'6". Freshman Autumn Maki placed 3rd in the 60m dash with a time of 8.24 seconds.
Next week, the Royals will compete on Saturday, February 1st at the Warren Bowlus Open at UW-Stout.
