Royals Pick up Second Straight MIAC Sweep, Defeat Wildcats 2-1

BLAINE, Minn. – The Bethel University women's hockey team picked up its fourth straight win and second straight MIAC sweep defeating the St. Catherine Wildcats in another one-goal game, 2-1. A 5-on-3 shorthanded goal in the second period by Dylan Grilz 4:52 in would hold as the game winner.

As the post-season approaches, the Royals move to a MIAC record of 8-7-1 and sit in fifth with 26 points, five ahead of St. Scholastica. The Royals improve to 14-8-1 overall.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Royals dominated the ice from the beginning of the first period and were able to gain a 1-0 heading into the second period. At 18:05 Kallie Abrahamson chipped in a shot off of a pass from Ali Hoerer.
Dylan Grilz added to the Royals' lead just four minutes into the second period while BU was fighting through a 5-on-3 penalty kill, winning the puck in the Royals' defensive end and skating it coast-to-coast for an unassisted–and her first-ever collegiate-goal.
• The Wildcats tightened the score at 13:52 in the third period when they were finally able to sneak the puck past netminder Anna Hanson.
Although SCU outshot the Royals 9-6 that period, they were unable to find the equalizing goal, and BU skated to a 2-1 victory.
• Hanson finished with 25 saves while BU's penalty kill went 3-for-3.

UP NEXT
The Royals will take on the Hamline in their last regular season series next Friday, Feb. 16, and travel to the Pipers' home ice at the TRIA Rink in St. Paul on Saturday, Feb. 17. Puck drop is set for 6 p.m. Friday.

PLAYOFF PICTURE
BU only needs to pick up one point in next weekend's series to secure a spot in the MIAC Playoffs. A loss of any kind next week by St. Scholastica against Augsburg also lands BU in its first 5-team MIAC Playoff since 2018. The Royals were the No. 7 seed in 2022 during the all-comers playoff year.
