ST. PAUL, Minn. – Bethel University women's basketball coach
Jon Herbrechtsmeyer captured his 400th career win as the Royals defeated Hamline on the road Saturday afternoon at historic Hutton Arena, 65-53.
Â
Of those 400 career wins, 315 have come as a Royal after he took over the program in 2002. Bethel won its fourth straight while improving to 6-1 on the year and 3-0 in MIAC play.
Â
Colette Duininck dropped a season-high 15 points to lead all Bethel scorers. She knocked down three of BU's seven treys and grabbed six boards in the process.
Anna Garfield finished with 14 points having gone 10-of-12 at the free throw line.
Elly Schmitz added 14 points, five rebounds and three blocks.
Emily Erickson grabbed a game-high eight rebounds.
Â
The Royals never trailed in Saturday's contest and only never led for a 30-second stretch after Hamline tied it 2-2 early on. BU fueled its best run of the game early in the first as an 8-0 run put them up 10-2. Erickson knocked down a three in the closing seconds of the first where Bethel led 17-6.
Â
The teams combined for eight makes in the second quarter as Hamline outscored the Royals 15-9. The 25 percent shooting by the Royals and a 7-0 run for the Pipers to close the half dwindled the Bethel advantage to 26-21.
Â
Schmitz opened the half with a three before Hamline got it within three. An 11-2 run over a 3:21 stretch allowed BU to open up its lead back to 12 with just over four minutes left in the third.
Â
Free throws helped BU keep a safe lead in the second half as they went 22-of-24 in the final 30 minutes. The Royals' first eight points of the fourth came from the charity stripe until Schmitz knocked down a three with 3:41 to go.
Â
Duininck's layup with 1:14 remaining gave Bethel its largest lead of the game at 65-47.
