ARDEN HILLS, Minn — The Bethel University volleyball team earned a three set sweep over Saint Mary's University on Friday night. The Royals won by scores of 25-21, 26-24 and 25-23 to improve to 8-1 in MIAC play this season and 18-7 overall.
Set one:
Hannah Penke capped off a 9-0 Royals run with an ace to take a commanding 12-4 lead in the first set.
Grace Solberg extended the Bethel lead to 13-7 with a kill of her own, the Cardinals later cut the Bethel lead to three before a pair of attack errors and a
Camille Renken kill opened up a 19-13 Royals advantage. A 4-1 run and a
Brenna Stark kill gave the Royals a 23-16 lead with Bethel going on to take set one by a score of 25-21.
Set two:
A
Devanie Andre ace gave the Royals a 3-0 lead to begin the second set.
Grace Solberg brought the Royals to within one with a kill cutting the Cardinals lead to 8-7. Down 20-13, a 8-1 Bethel run tied the game at 21, before an
Eleanor Pelzel kill tied the set at 22.
Brenna Stark came up with a pair of kills to give the Royals a 25-24 advantage and set point, taking it 26-24 on a Cardinal attack error.
Set three:
The Royals began set three with a 10-1 run capped off with a
Brenna Stark kill.
Grace Solberg extended the Bethel lead to 13-3 with a kill. A pair of
Peyton Howie kills later in the set gave the Royals a 19-12 lead. A 6-1 Saint Mary's run cut the Bethel lead to 21-20, before a pair of kills by
Grace Solberg and
Ellie Van Namen, followed by a
Brenna Stark ace moved it to match point. With the Royals winning 25-23 on a Cardinals attack error, taking the match 3-0.
Grace Solberg collected 15 kills, with
Peyton Howie earning 12 kills.
Brenna Stark had 8 kills and 24 assists of her own.
