ARDEN HILLS, Minn. — The Bethel University volleyball team earned a homecoming win over the College of Saint Benedict Saturday night 3-1. The Royals took the first two sets 25-17 and 27-25, dropping the third set 28-26, before taking the fourth set 25-13. The victory extends Bethel's winning streak to a season high seven games, improving their record to 15-4 overall and 5-0 in MIAC play.
Set one:
The Royals started hot, opening up a 7-3 lead early in the first set on a
Mattie Petersen ace. A pair of
Hannah Penke kills during a 7-0 Bethel run opened up a commanding 14-4 lead. Later a
Brenna Stark kill made it a 21-15 lead, with the Royals going on to take the opening set 25-17.
Set two:
The Bennies grabbed the early advantage in set two taking an early 5-0 lead, before a pair of
Peyton Howie kills cut the Royals deficit to 5-3. A
Peyton Howie kill later capped a 7-1 Bethel run to make it a 20-18 Bennie lead. The Royals tied the set at 21 on a Bennie attack error, later taking a 24-23 lead on a
Mattie Petersen kill.
Ellie Van Namen tied it at 25 with a kill starting a 3-0 Royal run to close it out, taking the second set 27-25.
Set three:
Hannah Penke came up with a pair of early kills to give Bethel a 7-5 lead. The Bennies quickly grabbed a 15-10 lead after a 10-2 run, but two
Grace Therrien aces helped cut the Royals deficit to two. Later a kill from Grace Soleberg tied the set at 17, later storming back to tie the set at 21 on a
Brenna Stark kill.
Hannah Penke gave the Royals the lead late on an ace before the Bennies went on a 4-1 run to take the set 28-26.
Set four:
A kill from
Peyton Howie opened up a 7-3 lead for the Royals to begin set four. Back-to-back
Grace Solberg kills extended the Bethel lead to 11-6, before a 5-1 run capped off with a
Hannah Penke kill made it an 18-10 BU advantage. A
Grace Solberg kill closed it out giving the Royals the set 25-13, and the match 3-1.
Peyton Howie led the way for the Royals racking up 24 kills,
Grace Solberg came up with 14 kills as well.
Mattie Petersen accounted for 4 of the Royals 12 aces, and
Grace Therrien collected 4 aces and 23 digs of her own.
