Royals with Tough Day Two at Marilyn Scribner Invitational

Wheaton, Ill. – The Bethel University volleyball team had a tough day two at the Marilyn Scribner Invitational on Saturday afternoon. The Royals lost both games, losing in four sets to #2 Hope - 19-25, 21-25, 25-21 and 20-25; and in five sets to Wheaton - 25-16, 20-25, 25-17, 21-25, and 10-15. The rough two game slate on Saturday dropped their record to 3-8 on the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED

• Hope's offense carried them through the first two sets, with a hitting percentage of .348 and .389 respectively
• Set one was dominated by the Flying Dutch as they took the lead at 2-1 and never looked back, holding a commanding lead of 20-12 midway through the set, eventually winning 25-19
• Set two consisted of a back and forth battle before Hope went on a 4-2 run to close out the set 25-21
• The second set had seven ties and but only two lead changes as BU could not get over the hump and take control
• Turning point in set two was a 6-2 run by Hope with the game tied at 13-13 to push their lead to 19-15
• Royals took set three with their defense, as they held the Flying Dutch to just a .146 hitting percentage
• BU had two key moments in set three; down 15-16 the Royals went on a 4-0 run taking the lead to 19-16, with the second being up 20-19, BU went on another 4-0 run, taking control of set three and eventually winning 25-21
• Set four was controlled by Hope with two separate 4-0 runs; with the game tied at 9-9 - HC took and extended their lead to 13-9 and at 15-13, the Flying Dutch put the game out of reach by pushing their lead to 19-13
• Royals were held to a measly .059 hitting percentage in the fourth set

HOW IT HAPPENED

• Set one was dominated by the Royals, jumping out to a 7-2 lead and then going on two 4-0 runs with the scores at; 9-6 and 17-10.
• BU had control of both sides of the court, with a set leading .361 hitting percentage while holding WC to just .182
• Set two was the set of runs - the Thunder had runs of 5-1, 7-1, and 6-1 while the Royals had runs of 4-0 and 9-2.
• The second set was contolled by the defense, as Bethel and Wheaton walked away with a - .031 and .179 hitting percentage
• Wheaton's 6-1 run with the set tied at 19 was the difference
• Royals took set three with their defense, as they held the Thunder to a .098 hitting percentage
• BU's massive 13-3 start to set three turned out to be too much for WC
• Set four was taken by Wheaton's defense, holding Bethel to a .026 hitting percentage
• Back and fourth set four had eight ties and was determined by the Thunder's 4-0 run to end the set with the score tied at 21
• The tie-breaking set was started out with a 5-2 run by the Thunder followed by another run of 3-1 to put them into a set and game controlling 8-3 lead
• The fifth set was decided by he opposite side of the ball, as the offense from Wheaton took the set and game for the Thunder, with a hitting percentage of .412
