ST. PETER, Minn. – After a strong, 4-1 victory last night, the Bethel men's hockey team suffered their first loss of the season falling to Gustavus Adolphus College in their second matchup of the weekend series, 6-2. The Royals move to 2-1-1 in the conference and 5-1-2 on the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Royals got off to a rocky start as the Gusties buried the puck behind BU netminder Travis Allen on a rebound just 25 seconds into the game.
- Tyler Kostelecky evened the odds for the Royals at 4:30, scoring a one-timer off a pass from Braeden Bartoo, but the goal-scoring energy didn't stick.
- A string of penalties set Bethel back as they had to battle through numerous penalty kills before finally allowing a power play goal for the Gusties with just over five minutes to go. GAC's momentum snowballed from there, and they added two more goals at 15:54 and 19:21 to finish out the first period with a substantial lead.
- Jake Herter earned the lone goal of the second period from right in front of the Gustie net, flicking it past the goaltender with a quick backhand at 5:02. Gustavus outshot Bethel that period, 11-8, but Austin Ryman's lockdown performance in net kept them scoreless for the period.
- The Gusties managed to break through again in the third period, scoring another power play goal at 6:55 and bringing the score to 5-2, Gustavus.
- Bethel pulled Ryman from the ice with just over two minutes left, and the Gusties capitalized on the opportunity when they earned the puck back, scoring an empty-netter and finalizing the score at 6-2, Gustavus.
