BLAINE, Minn. – A multi-goal effort from freshman
Joe Westlund paced the Bethel men's hockey team to a 4-1 defeat of Gustavus Adolphus in the series opening Friday evening.
The Royals' unbeaten streak moves to seven as they are now 5-0-2 on the season and 2-0-1 in MIAC play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
•
Joe Westlund earned his second goal of the year and kicked off the scoring for the Royals nine minutes into the first period, sneaking the puck past the Gustie tender off of a well-placed pass from
Adam Bricker.
• Westlund added to the Royals' 1-0 lead with his second of the night. Bricker cleared the puck out of the corner where
Logan Anderson found Westlund. Westlund's shot fell below the GAC netminder before his weight shifting scooted the puck over the line making it 2-0.
• Four minutes later in the second,
Braeden Bartoo extended the lead to 3-0.
• The Gusties were finally able to find their way past Royal goaltender
Travis Allen just thirty seconds after Bartoo's goal, making the score 3-1
• Anderson, after assisting on the first two goals, deepened the Royals' lead just three minutes later scoring with Bethel on the power play.
• Though the Gusties outshot the Royals 33-27, Allen's strong showing in net kept them from scoring further, and BU secured a 4-1 victory.
• Allen finished with 26 saves while BU's penalty kill went 2-for-2.
