GENEVA, Ill. – The Bethel women's hockey team dropped a close game, 3-2, to the Aurora University Spartans while on the road for their first regular season game.
How It Happened
• With Bethel on its first power play of the night, the Spartans opened up the scoring at the 12:28 mark with a shorthanded goal. But the Royals answered almost immediately going back on the power play 41 seconds later where
Beth Velasco evened it up just 18 seconds into the man advantage.
• The teams headed into the second period tied, 1-1, but Aurora found the back of the Royal net just under six and a half minutes in for the period's only goal.
• Bethel charged into the third as
Reagan Aus scored 1:44 into third, evening it at 2-2 and putting Bethel right back in the game despite of the Spartans' immense offensive pressure.
• But Aurora managed to capitalize on one of their 21 shots in the third period doing so with 8:13 remaining.
• The Royals spent most of the remaining time down a skater with the penalty kill units fending off four Aurora power plays the rest of the way.
• The Spartans more than doubled the Royals shots on goal, posting 53 to BU's 23, but Royal goalie
Anna Hanson made a career-high 50 saves keeping Bethel in the game.
