Stellmach Sets 60m Record, Royals Win Season Opener

RESULTS

ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Bethel Royals opened up the 2023 track and field season with a team title at the Vanessa Seljeskog Classic hosted by Macalester. Bethel tallied 138 team points, defeating 7 MIAC teams. "Our women had a great season opener," said Head Coach Andrew Rock. "There was a lot of excitement from our team. It was great to see the love and support they poured out for each other.  We wanted to come into this meet with boldness and our women showed that."

The meet was highlighted by Sarah Stellmach's program record in the 60m dash. Her time of 7.81 edged out Ashley Magelssen's record from 2012 by just 0.01 seconds. Stellmach's time places her 20th on the Division III honor roll. Not far behind was teammate Jireh Babalola, who took 2nd in a personal best time of 7.89, ranking her 35th in Division III.

Kelsie Sealock showed why she is one of the top hurdlers in Division III by winning the race in 8.84 seconds. Her season opener ranks as the 7th fastest in Division III this year. Sealock also came back to win the 200m in a time of 26.46.

Emma Roethler added to the list of national level performances on Saturday. Roethler heaved a personal best in the shot put with a mark of 13.37m / 43'10.5". That throw ranks her 13th in Division III.

Freshman Ellie Hernes earned a pair of 3rd place finishes in her first collegiate meet. Hernes was 3rd in the triple jump with a leap of  11.24m / 36'10.5", which currently ranks her 25th in Division III. She also took 3rd in the 60m hurdles, running 9.68 seconds, just 0.01 off 2nd place.

Glasha Hovey won the high jump in her first collegiate competition. Hovey cleared 1.54m / 5'0.5" with a clean score card.

Molly Lukenbill had an enormous day in the weight throw by throwing a personal best by more then 6 and a half feet. Her mark of 15.49m / 50'10" won the event by over 18 inches.

The Royals will compete again next Saturday, January 28th at St. Olaf.
