GENEVA, Ohio - Gabe Irons is the national runner-up in the discus! Irons led the field going into the finals, throwing 54.58m / 179'1". That mark ended up as the 2nd best throw in the nation, just 13" away from the national champion. This is Irons' first All-American honor as he has now competed in three consecutive national championships. Irons will also compete in the shot put, which begins at 10:30 am Central on Friday.
Lukas Walton had a terrific first day of the decathlon on Thursday. His point total of 3,543 is his best score after day 1 in his career. Walton had personal bests in the 100m (11.33), long jump (6.52m / 21'4.25"), and 400m (50.53) and had decathlon bests in the shot put (10.88m / 35'8.5") and high jump (1.91m / 6'3.25"). Day 2 of the decathlon begins at 9:00 am Central with the 110H, discus, pole vault, javelin, and the 1500m.Â
The Royals will have two athletes represented in the 400m hurdle finals on Saturday as both Joel Smith and Tyler Sealock earned qualifying marks. Smith won the first heat with a time of 52.40, while Sealock was on his heels in 52.62 to take 2nd place in the same heat. Smith and Sealock will race in the finals on Saturday at 1:25 pm Central time.
The men's 4x400m relay team will be running on Championship Saturday as they qualified for the finals. The team of Jacob Parent, Sealock, Josh Sampson, and Smith came away with the 7th fastest time of the night, running 3:15.02. The 4x400m relay finals will take place on Saturday at 3:00 pm Central time.Â
The women's 4x400m relay team earned a qualifying spot into the finals at the NCAA Division III National Championships. The team of Hannah Sankey, Sarah Stellmach, Mikayla Turek, and Kelsie Sealock ran a season best time of 3:48.84, which is more than 3 seconds faster than the Royals ran at the Drake Relays. Bethel will be racing in the final on Saturday at 2:50 pm Central time.
