Royals Earn 5-3 Series Opening Victory at Concordia

MOORHEAD, Minn. – With five different goal scorers in Saturday's series opener at Concordia-Moorhead, the Bethel University men's hockey skated to a 5-3 victory over the Cobbers.

Concordia, who sat second in the MIAC standings heading into the weekend, opened up the scoring frenzy 7:05 into the first.

The Royals responded with three straight goals through the final 5:02 of the first. Jake Herter scored the equalizer with just over five to go. Fresh off an assist on Herter's goal, Jarrett Cammarata got in on the scoring action a minute later giving BU the lead which it kept for good.

Adam Bricker moved the lead to 3-1 scoring with 22 seconds remaining before the first intermission.

Bethel had the game's first power play advantage 5:38 into the second. Junior Sam Wilhite scored 1:19 into it for his first power-play goal of the year. Making it 4-1, that goal will eventually become the game-winner which is Wilhite's first of his career.

The Cobbers got two back on Bethel, including a power play goal, making it 4-3 as the teams headed into the locker room after two periods.

Netminder Travis Allen kept the Cobbers off the board in the third where he collected 11 of his 33 saves, coming up two stops shy of his career-high.

BU added an insurance goal but did so while shorthanded. Jory McWillams scored his fourth of the year at the 11:47 mark.

Concordia went with the extra attacker for the final 1:59 but the Royals held them in check allowing only one shot on goal in that time frame.

The two teams close out the series tomorrow morning at 10:45 a.m.
