ARDEN HILLS, Minn. – A
Jaren Tschetter layup with five seconds left that developed from a well-executed play lifted the Bethel University men's basketball team to a hard fought 60-59 victory over Macalester on Senior Day Saturday afternoon.
Coming off a timeout with 11 seconds remaining and inbounding from the sideline, the Royals executed a set piece to perfection. A driving
Joey Kidder found a backdoor cutting Tschetter who finished the reverse layup. After a Scots timeout, sound defense by BU forced Macalester to come up short on a last second prayer.
It was the cherry on top after the Royals celebrated Tschetter,
Isaiah Rollins and
Cade Johnson in a senior day ceremony prior to the game.
Tschetter finished with a team-high 15 points while right behind him was
Zach Doely with 13. Off the bench,
Tommy Jensen chipped in 12 points.
BU trailed by as many as 10 with 5:51 to go before going on a 14-2 run. A hook shot from Doely tied it at 56-56 with 1:44 remaining before a driving layup from
Joey Kidder handed BU its first lead since the opening minute of the game.
Macalester responded on the other end connecting on a three-point play to go up 59-58 before the Royals got the ruckus Robertson Center crowd on their feet with the back door play.
The Scots shot lights out from behind the arc in the first half going 8-of-16. Bethel kept it within reach trailing 36-27 at the half.
The Royals are on the road Monday traveling to St. Olaf for a 7:45 p.m. tipoff.
