ARDEN HILLS, Minn. – Sophomore
Lydia Hagstrom's big second half performance led her to match a career-high 15 points and pace the Bethel University women's basketball team to a 63-59 MIAC opening win over Carleton.
A big fourth quarter that saw BU outscore the Knights 25-21 and shoot 63.3 percent (7-of-11) helped them hold on to a second half lead. The Royals out rebounded the Knights on a 46-33 margin, 23 of those came on the offense side of the floor.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Half
• Both teams had their fair share of turnovers early on, a combined 16 to be exact, but the scoring eventually got there as BU held a lead no bigger than four.
• Leading 15-14 at the first break, BU had 12 of those points come in the pain.
• Carleton took a lead early in the second leading by as many as six before the Royals tied it pu with a jumper from
Rosalie Penke.
• Sophomore
Lauren Johnson scored her only bucket of the night with 2:26 to go making it 28-25. Neither team could connect on a shot the rest of the half sending the Royals into the locker room up three.
Second Half
• Hagstrom started with back-to-back buckets in the third giving BU a 34-28 advantage with 7:35 to go in the third.
• The Knights kept it a one possession game with a three ball and a second chance opportunity. The lead for Bethel was 38-35 after three quarters.
• A combined effort of
Kendal Cox and Hagstrom would give BU its largest margin of the night at seven on four separate occasions.
• Hagstrom made it 60-55 with 1:05 remaining before getting a huge block on the other end, her second of the night. BU would finish it at the charity stripe.
KEY PERFORMERS
• Hagstrom had her second career double-double adding 10 rebounds, four on the offensive end, to her 15-point performance. She added one assist and four steals.

Emma Schultz in 32 minutes of action added 10 points and seven rebounds.
•
Anna Garfield scored nine points and grabbed nine rebounds, six of those offensive.
