RESULTS
NORTHFIELD, Minn. - The Royals won 7 events and senior Lukas Walton broke the school record in the heptathlon at the St. Olaf Quad this weekend. Walton scored 4,757 points, and is currently ranked 8th in Division III. Walton competed in the 60m (7.48), long jump (6.06m / 19'10.5"), shot put (10.22m / 33'6.25"), high jump (1.82m / 5'11.75"), 60m hurdles (8.70), pole vault (4.15m / 13'7.25"), and 1000m (2:44.56). Here is how the rest of the events broke down:
SPRINTS
The Royals won 3 of the 4 sprint events on Friday evening. Freshman Cameron McConnell ran a personal best of 7.18 in the 60m dash to take 1st place. Jacob Parent and Josh Sampson went 1-2 in the 200m later in the day. Parent won the race in 22.70 (the 2nd best time in the MIAC) and Sampson took 2nd in 22.84 (the 3rd best time in the MIAC). Bethel also took the top 2 spots in the 60m hurdles. Freshman Jayson Ekiyor won with a MIAC leading time of 8.29 and David Myres took 2nd with a personal best of 8.53. Ekiyor's time is also the 11th best in Division III this year.
DISTANCE
Joel Smith was the top finisher for Bethel in the distance events. Smith won the 600m as he led wire-to-wire, running 1:21.74, the 3rd best time in program history. Ike Mendel took 3rd place in the 3000m run, breaking the 9-minute barrier in a time of 8:58.82.
RELAYS
Bethel once again showed their depth in the 400m as the Royals took 1st and 2nd in the 4x400m relay. The team of Nathan Smith, Jacob Parent, Tad Stewart, and Josh Sampson ran a time of 3:28.67 for the win.Â
FIELD
For the 2nd week in a row, Gabe Irons won both of the throwing events. Irons improved on his MIAC lead in the weight throw by winning with a toss of 17.48m / 57'4.25". Irons also won the shot put on his final throw with a distance of 14.16m / 46'5.5". Freshman Godsword Simon took 2nd place in the long jump with a leap of 6.20m / 20'4.25". Luke Wiltshire earned 2nd place in the high jump as he cleared 1.80m / 5'10.75", while Alec Braun took 3rd in 1.70m / 5'7".Â
UP NEXT
The Royals will host the Gene Glader Classic on Saturday, February 5th, in the Sport & Recreation Center on campus. For the first time this year, fans will be allowed at the meet and will be required to wear a mask.
