MINNEAPOLIS – The Bethel University women's basketball had its hands full walking into Si Melby Hall Wednesday evening to take on MIAC-unbeaten Augsburg. A cold stretch offensively in the third quarter allowed the host Auggies to pull away as the Royals fell 67-57.
Freshman
Hayden Glander recorded her second double-double in the last three games with 17 points and 11 rebounds. In nearly 30 minutes of action,
Makenna Pearson added 14 points, three rebounds, four assists and four steals.
Anna Garfield finished with 10 points.
A fast-paced opening quarter saw Bethel (10-7, 9-5 MIAC) shoot an even 50 percent. But Augsburg (13-3, 13-0 MIAC) were just as hot knocking down three of their seven treys in the quarter where they led 22-16.
With 5:02 left in the second, Glander made a nice move in the post to end an Augsburg 8-0 run over a two-minute stretch. Trailing by as many as 13 at one point, BU got within six before going into the locker room down 40-32.
Bethel went cold from the field going 3-of-14 in the third. While the Royals struggled to find the bottom of the net, Augsburg went on an 11-0 run opening up its largest lead of the night at 56-39.
The Royals deficit stayed in double digits for the fourth despite forcing the Auggies to go 0-for-7 from 3-point range and keeping them off the free throw line.
Returning to the Robertson Center on Saturday, Bethel takes on St. Catherine at 1 p.m.
