ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Royals opened up the 2022 track and field season with a team victory at the Vanessa Seljeskog Classic. Bethel scored 173 team points and won 6 event titles. Here is how the meet breaks down:
FIELD EVENTS
AnnaGrace Nelson led the charge in the field events for the Royals on Saturday. Nelson won the high jump with a personal best and MIAC-leading leap of 1.60m / 5'3". She also took 2nd place in the triple jump with a mark of 10.79m / 35'5". Jessica Lilland earned the victory in the pole vault with a jump of 3.30m / 10'10". Sadie Koelz was 3rd with her jump of 3.15m / 10'4". Emma Roethler represented Bethel well in the shot put with a personal best toss of 12.53m / 41'1.5" and took 2nd place in the event.
DISTANCE
Bethel earned 3 event titles in the distance events. Mikayla Turek edged out teammate Annessa Ihde in the 600m as the pair went 1-2. Turek ran 1:41.57 while Ihde was less than 0.1 behind at 1:41.66. Emily Brockberg took 3rd in 1:51.27. The Royals also swept the top 3 spots in the 1000m run. Captain Grace Cole won in 3:13.81, Evie Hage was 2nd in 3:18.20, and Ruby Gernandt was 3rd in 3:19.88. In the mile, Bethel took the top 2 spots with Mikayla Erlenborn winning in 5:35.82 and Anna Decker in 2nd with 5:38.74.
SPRINTS
The Royals had a pair of 2nd place finishes in the sprint events. AnnaGrace Nelson took 2nd in the 60m hurdles. After multiple timing malfunctions, Nelson ran 4 hurdle races with her best time being 9.60. Britta Nordberg took 2nd place in the 200m with a time of 27.08.
RELAYS
Bethel showed their depth in the 4x400m relay, taking 1st and 2nd place. The team of Jessie Smith, Mikayla Turek, Hailey Gregg, and Makenna Brown won the race in 4:13.09. Bethel also took 3rd place in the 4x200m relay. Ally Stackhouse, Ella Eliason, Kaitlyn Braun, and Sadie Koelz ran a time of 1:55.60.

UP NEXT
The Royals will travel south to Northfield next weekend to compete at the St. Olaf Quad on Friday, January 28th. There will be no fans allowed in the facility, but a live stream and live results will be provided.
