ARDEN HILLS, Minn. – The Bethel University men's soccer team battled to a double-overtime draw, 1-1, with Hamline at Ona Orth Athletic Complex Saturday afternoon.
In what was an evenly played 110 minutes, Bethel out shot Hamline 18-10 and held the edge in shots on goal 10-7.
The Royals found themselves trailing early in the first when the Pipers scored on a shot 10 yards out after the ball was deflected off of another player in the seventh minute.
Austin Heckman evened the match up in the second with his first goal of the season. TJ Franz sent a ball up to the top of the box, which deflected off of
Ben Richburg allowing Heckman to shoot just inside of 18 yards for a goal in the 65th minute.
In the overtime periods, Bethel had a total of seven corner kicks with multiple opportunities , but could not find a way to overcome Hamline's defense. The Royals defense held strong, allowing two shots in the final 20 minutes.
Recording its first tie of the season, Bethel moves to 6-1-1 on the year and 0-1-1 in MIAC play. BU will have its next chance on the pitch against Macalester Tuesday Sept. 28th at 7:30 in St. Paul.
