ST. PAUL, Minn. – A pair of early goals in the second half from
Lauren Davis and
Katie Oneill led the Bethel University women's soccer team to a season opening win on the road at Northwestern, 2-1.
The Royals dominated on the offensive end out shooting the Eagles 24-5 while also leading the shots on goal battle 11-4.
BU controlled it from the very beginning with a strong back like that allowed one first half shot for the opposition. Meanwhile the front line tallied 11 shots but went into the break with neither team scoring.
In the 55th minute that all changed. Coming off a save on the other end by goalkeeper
Izzy Smith, the Royals worked it quickly to the other end where
Cassie Leland fed it to Davis who broke the scoreless tie.
A little over two minutes later Oneill increased BU's lead to a pair.
UNW got one back in the 78th minute making it 2-1, but would never see another opportunity to find the equalizer.
Bethel is back in action Saturday for its home opener against Dubuque. The action at Ona Orth begins at 4 p.m.
