Men’s Soccer Wins Thrilling Season Opener at Northwestern

ST. PAUL, Minn. – A two goal performance from junior Matthias Caspari captured a 2-1 season opening victory for the Bethel University men's soccer team Wednesday evening at Northwestern.

Knotted at 1-1 with just over six minutes remaining, Caspari put pressure on a Northwestern defender in the Royals attacking zone forcing the Eagles to play it back to their keeper. Caspari instantly sprinted toward the keeper hoping for a miscue and that's exactly what he got.

As the UNW goalkeeper attempted to clear it, Caspari stepped right in front redirecting it into the back of the net.

Northwestern broke the scoreless tie in the 20th minute where they took that 1-0 lead into the break.

BU showed no quit as Caspari found the equalizer with an assist from Braulio Tapia.

Goalie Colin Hupert may have had only three saves, but two of those came back-to-back as a loose ball lingered a few yards inside of the box in the 83rd minute. Keeping UNW stuck at one on the scoreboard set up Caspari for the game winner on the other end.

Bethel returns to the pitch Friday for another road test, this time against Minnesota-Morris. First touch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
