Second Half Comeback Comes Up Short for Royals

ARDEN HILLS, Minn. – A late second half run came up just short as the Bethel University men's basketball team dropped its final home game of the abbreviated 2021 season to Gustavus Adolphus, 70-62.

Chandler Wellman reeled in a 13-point, 11-rebound double-double for the Royals while Isaiah Carver-Bagley chipped in a team-high 16 points. The Royals struggled from the 3-point line shooting a mere 19.2 percent (5-of-26) while going 37.1 percent (23-of-62) from behind the arc.

A slow start offensively by both teams led to a low scoring opening 20 minutes. Trailing by as many as 11, Bethel cut the halftime deficit to 29-25.

Noah Whalen knocked down a second chance 3-pointer with 9:10 remaining getting Bethel within two. Over the next two minutes, Bethel would stay within a possession before a 3-point play by Isaiah Rollins cut it to one.

The Royals went cold over the next three minutes allowing the Gusties to open up an 11-point lead with under 90 seconds to go. GAC would seal the victory from the free throw line in the final minute.

Up next the Royals hit the road Saturday traveling to St. Thomas one last time before the Tommies transition to Division I. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m.
