WINONA, Minn. – After falling in double overtime on Thursday to Saint John's, the Bethel University men's soccer team rebounded in another double overtime match coming out on top 1-0 at Saint Mary's Saturday afternoon.
Bethel had to go the length of the pitch off a goal kick as
Colin Hupert got it to midfield. The Royals won a 50/50 ball passing it ahead to Mellema whose touch pushed it past the Saint Mary's back line. Winning the foot race against the Cardinals' goalkeeper, Mellema took a left footed shot into the lower right corner for the game winner in the 107th minute.
An even first half in the shot column sent both teams scoreless into the break despite the Royals getting a pair of early looks on frame from
Youssef Abdallah.
Another even half in the second saw neither team's defense break forcing the Royals into their second overtime match in three days.
Saint Mary's had three shots late in the first overtime all off target while Bethel had no looks. Bethel limited the Cardinals to one off target chance before going the other way earning three points in the MIAC standings.
Bethel is back on the gridiron tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m. hosting Wisconsin-Platteville in a non-conference matchup.
