ST. PETER, Minn. – There is still plenty of work to be done for the Bethel University men's basketball team, but with a 65-58 win at Gustavus Adolphus University Saturday afternoon the Royals have secured a spot in the MIAC Playoffs for the ninth consecutive season.
The Royals, now 15-8 on the year and 12-6 in MIAC play, have earned at least a No. 4 seed and a home quarterfinal game in the conference tournament following Saint Mary's loss to Hamline. BU has a chance to propel themselves to the No. 3 spot Wednesday when they travel to Augsburg for a 7 p.m. tip.
Jack Jenson was a big second half factor where 11 of his game-high 17 points came. Jenson added seven boards, four assists and four steals to his stat line.
Isaiah Carver-Bagley and
Chandler Wellman were the other two Royals in double digit figures with 15 and 13 points respectively.
Gustavus held a 13-point lead with under six minutes to go in the first before the Royals offense came to life with a 10-0 run. Carver-Bagley knocked down a pair of treys sending BU into the break trailing by one.
The Royals tied it on three more occasions before Carver-Bagley knocked down a 3-pointer giving BU the lead with 15:25 to go. The Gusties tied it up on one more occasion but then it was the Jenson show rattling off BU's next 11 points.
Bethel's pesky defense turned GAC's 18 turnovers into 21 points while the Royals shot 44.4 percent (24-of-54) from the floor.
