ARDEN HILLS, Minn. – A pair of unanswered second half goals by the visiting Pipers handed the Bethel University men's soccer team a 3-2 loss Saturday afternoon at Ona Orth. The Royals held the lead twice before Hamline completed comeback efforts dropping the Royals to 6-4 on the year and 1-2 in MIAC play.
Bethel looks to get back to its winning ways Tuesday traveling to Macalester for a 7:30 p.m. match. The Royals return home on Oct. 5 hosting St. Thomas for homecoming.
Brandon Martinez-Luhman got the momentum rolling for the Royals with a goal in the 10th minute. It was like clockwork with
Connor Nelson sending a pass to Martinez who was about 14 yards out taking the strike that put BU on the board.
Hamline found the equalizer in the 33rd minute on a shot that was intended as a send in but deflected off a Bethel defender's head and redirected into the back of the net.
The 1-1 tie didn't last long after the break, junior
Cobi Heckmann put the lead back in Bethel's possession 37 seconds into the second half. Martinez picked up the assist with his long pass from the Royals defensive middle finding Heckmann. It was from there that Heckman worked down the pitch with defenders on each side before taking a shot midway into the box.
Hamline continued to test the Bethel back line tying it up in the 56th minute. The Royals countered attack with some good looks as well as a few corner kick opportunities. The Pipers took advantage of the Royals fatigue as BU played with a short roster due to injuries. A mishandle by
Ben Wright in goal allowed Hamline's Stefan Kinsinger to tap in the game winner in the 81st minute.
