ST. PAUL, Minn. – A goal 56 seconds into overtime for the Macalester Scots sent the Bethel University men's soccer team home with a heartbreaking 1-0 loss Tuesday evening. Dropping its second straight one goal match Bethel falls to 6-5 on the year and 1-3 in MIAC play. BU returns to Ona Orth Saturday celebrating homecoming weekend hosting St. Thomas at 1 p.m.
The two teams played to a scoreless 90 minutes until Macalester used precession passing to get an open look. A pass to the middle drew in four Bethel defenders before a Scot got loose on the outside. One-on-one with goalie
Colin Hupert, Macalester's Webster An beat Hupert on a shot up over Hupert's hands and into the back of the net.
Hupert had to make a big save in the final two minutes while BU fell just short of capitalizing on a few scoring opportunities as time winded down. Macalester had four corner kick opportunities in the first while the shots rang even at 6-6. The Scots went on to outshoot the Royals 12-9.
