ST. BONIFACIUS, Minn. – A pair of second half goals led the Bethel University men's soccer team to a 3-1 non-conference victory over Crown College Thursday evening. Junior
Cobi Heckmann scored his second game winning goal of the year while
Brandon Martinez-Luhman added the insurance.
Now 6-3 on the year, Bethel returns to the pitch Saturday hosting Hamline at Ona Orth. Kick off is set for 1 p.m.
Freshman
Keegan Mellema scored his first collegiate goal in the 28th minute.
Angel Mendoza controlled the ball on the far sideline when he saw Mellema open in the middle of the field. Mellema took a few touches after a perfect pass from Mendoza before firing a shot right inside of the box.
Crown found the equalizer on its only shot on goal of the game. The Storm skipped one past goalie
Ben Wright with 20 seconds remaining in the first half evening things up at 1-1.
The Royals responded in the best way after the break out shooting the Storm 19-3 in the second half. Heckmann's goal in the 61st minute, which was his second of the season, was assisted by
Connor Nelson and
Ben Richburg while giving the lead back to BU. Martinez-Luhman gave Bethel some late game insurance scoring on a pass from
Zach Caouette with 42 seconds remaining in the match.
