ARDEN HILLS, Minn. - The Bethel University football team travels to St. Thomas for a showdown with the Tommies in the last regular season contest. The winner between No. 9 Bethel (8-1, 6-1) and No. 17 St. Thomas (7-2, 6-1) will share the MIAC title with No. 8 Saint John's (8-1, 6-1), who has already clinched the MIAC's automatic berth into the NCAA Playoffs thanks to their victories over both teams. The Royals maintain NCAA Playoff hopes as Bethel will be in contention for one of the five at large berths available with a win over St. Thomas. The Tommies, with their two losses, have not appeared in the region rankings and do not have any hopes of getting an NCAA Playoff berth regardless of Saturday's outcome.
Bethel is looking to beat UST in back-to-back seasons for the first time since 2013 and 2014 when the Royals took down the Tommies at Royal Stadium both years. Bethel defeated UST last season at Royal Stadium 21-15 in what was a defacto play in game for both teams in garnering an NCAA playoff at large berth. The stage is slightly different this year with a MIAC co-championship on the line but also the uncertainty around whether the winner will get into the NCAA Playoffs. The Royals have been on a roll since their lone loss in week 6 at Saint John's. In the four games since, Bethel has put together complete and impressive performances in all four games, averaging nearly 53 points per game and allowing just under six points per game. St. Thomas has won their last three games since their own loss to SJU by an average score of 58-19. The loss that is keeping UST out of playoff contention was a week three slipup at UW-Eau Claire in which the Blugolds (3-6) beat St. Thomas 21-19.
