ARDEN HILLS, MINN.—The No. 8 Bethel University football team cruised to a 77-0 shutout of Hamline at Royal Stadium on Saturday night, a new school record for points scored in a game. Their 77 points scored surpassed the previous school record of 76 on October 20, 2001, when they defeated Carleton 76-2 at Royal Stadium.
The Royals move to 2-1, 2-0Â MIAC, while the Pipers fall to 1-2, 0-2 MIAC.
Bethel 77, Hamline 0
Bethel accumulated 340 yards rushing, which consisted of a pair of 100+ yard rushers in David Geebli and Taye Manns. Geebli registered 110 yards and two touchdowns on just 10 carries for 11.0 yards per carry, while Manns had 108 yards and two touchdowns on just seven carries for a whopping 15.4 yards per carry. This included a 57-yard score from Geebli and a 54-yard touchdown run from Manns, both of which occurred in a second quarter that resulted in 35 points that gave Bethel a 49-0 halftime lead before they scored 21 in the third, and seven in the fourth frame.
Albert Rundell made his return to the Royals lineup with six catches for 58 yards and two touchdowns. Aiden Eckert had seven grabs for 41 yards, while Ty Haring notched four receptions for 70 yards, which included a 40-yard touchdown grab in the third quarter.
Quarterback Cooper Drews completed 16-of-28 passes for 157 yards and two touchdowns, along with 36 yards rushing on seven carries. Logan Butler converted a 5-of-7 mark for 85 yards and one touchdown in the third quarter for Bethel. The fourth quarter saw Royals quarterback Cole Gerrell complete 3-of-5 passes for 18 yards, and add 36 yards and one touchdown on six carries.
Jake Borman was all over the stat sheet for Bethel with a 21-yard interception return for a touchdown in the second quarter, five tackles that included two TFL's and 0.5 sacks, one pass breakup, and a blocked punt that led to Taylor Glynn's scoop and score from eight yards out in the second quarter. Borman engineered a Bethel defense that held Hamline to just 85 yards of offense that included 24 rushing and 61 passing, as well as just 3 first downs compared to the Royals' 37.
Bethel's 600 yards of offense consisted of 340 rushing and 260 passing.Â
The Royals will travel to No. 5 Saint John's (Minn.) on Saturday, October 3. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
