Bethel Drops Double Overtime Heartbreaker to #17 St. Thomas

ARDEN HILLS, Minn. – The Bethel University women's soccer team battled to the end with the No. 17th-ranked University of St. Thomas Sunday afternoon at Ona Orth Athletic Complex. Inclement weather forced the two teams to have to wait and extra day and the effort put forth did not disappoint. A goal in the 109th minute by St. Thomas denied the Royals of an upset victory taking the contest 2-1 in double overtime.

Falling to 8-2 on the year and 3-2 in MIAC play the Royals host Finlandia Wednesday at Ona Orth in non-conference action. First touch comes at 4 p.m.

Trailing 1-0 after a St. Thomas goal in the 59th minute on a header off a corner kick, the Royals capitalized on an equalizing opportunity from a free kick. Caela Helgemo ran in for a quick touch before Brooke Ogne sent a strike into the upper 90 from 41 yards out tying the match at one apiece in the 78th minute.

Goalkeeper Kaylee Peterson kept Bethel within reach playing lights out in her season-high 10 save performance. Peterson made some big saves early on helping the Royals go into the break scoreless with UST despite being outshot 11-2.

The Royals held strong down the stretch forcing an overtime period in which both teams had a pair of good looks. In the second overtime, Peterson made a big save on what was a close non-offside call against UST. Peterson came out one-on-one before a slide at the box deflected the shot away. BU was unable to clear a dangerous ball before UST's Tessa Trettel took a touch getting around the Bethel defender before scoring her second goal of the game and game-winner.
