ARDEN HILLS, Minn. – After inclement weather postponed the match by one day, the Bethel University men's soccer team was bested by St. Thomas, 3-0, on a beautiful fall afternoon at Ona Orth Athletic Complex. The Tommies tallied a pair in the second half, but only the goal in the 8th minute was needed to win Sunday's contest.
Bethel drops down to the .500 mark at 6-6 for the year and 1-4 in MIAC play. The Royals look to snap their three-match losing streak Saturday at St. Mary's at 1 p.m.
Despite surrendering three goals, Bethel goalkeeper
Colin Hupert had a strong match in just his second match back after suffering an injury early in the season. The sophomore out of White Bear Lake, Minn. was one save shy of his career-high with nine.
St. Thomas jumped on the Royals early forcing a miscue by the BU back line. A pass came across the pitch to UST's Jake Amey who sent it past a diving Hupert. The Tommies outshot the Royals 16-5 taking their 1-0 lead into the break.
The Royal's best second half chance came midway through at the 66th minute.
Brandon Martinez-Luhman received a pass from the right side that drew the St. Thomas keeper out. Martinez fired off a shot that went right into the chest of the diving UST keeper who came out to challenge the look.
St. Thomas added an insurance goal in the 78th minute drawing out Hupert before a UST forward came sprinting down the opposite side tapping in a pass from the offensive player that challenged Hupert. UST's goal in the 88th minute put the match out of reach for the Royals who were outshot 25-11.
