ST. PAUL, Minn. – On a wet and rainy Wednesday night the Bethel University women's soccer team dropped its first match of the season at the hands of Macalester. The Scots used two first half goals to defeat the Royals 2-1 despite Bethel outshooting Macalester 18-7 for the match.
The Royals eight match winning streak to start the season was the best in program history as the now fall to 8-1 and 3-1 in MIAC play. BU has another tough challenge in hosting the No. 17th-ranked St. Thomas Saturday at Ona Orth for homecoming. Kickoff is set for 3:30 or 30 minutes following the men's match.
Macalester took an early lead with a goal less than four minutes into the match which they held for the next 28 minutes. The Royals evened up the match in the 32nd minute when
Claire Radatz was fouled inside the box creating a penalty kick opportunity.
Rachel Waterman buried the PK evening up the match at 1-1.
The tie did not last long as the Scots were able to tap in a rebound shot two minutes later. A shot from Macalester outside the box was saved by
Kaylee Peterson but the rebound went right to an opposing player who tapped in the eventual game-winner.
BU increased its offensive intensity outshooting Macalester 12-3 in the second half, six of which were on goal. The Royals were taking shots at all parts of the frame narrowly missing. The best look came in the 69th minute from
Brooke Ogne who forced the Scots keeper to make a diving save.
Bethel did not allow a single corner kick in the match while having five itself.
