Royals Persevere for Program Record 10th Shutout

ARDEN HILLS, Minn. – It didn't come by easy but the Bethel University women's soccer team battled to the end shutting out conference-leading Augsburg, 1-0, Saturday afternoon at Ona Orth Athletic Complex. A goal by sophomore Lauren Davis in the opening minutes of the game and a stellar performance from the defense earned the Royals their 10th shutout of the year which surpassed the program record from 2009.

Senior goalkeeper Kaylee Peterson surpassed her own record with her eighth shutout of the year which is an individual single-season record. Now with 157 career saves, Peterson sits two shy of moving up to seventh all-time with Sara Herman.

The win puts Bethel at 11-3 for the season and 5-3 in the MIAC where they sit fifth in the standings. The Royals are back in action Wednesday when they host Martin Luther in a non-conference matchup slated for 3:30 p.m.

Davis scored the match's only goal and her 11th of the season beating out a pair of Augsburg defenders. A lose ball from midfield was sent towards the top of the box drawing out the Auggie goalkeeper, but Davis was just able to get a foot on it sending it past the keeper and into the back of the net.

Peterson was put to work in the second half where four of her five saves came. In the 82nd minute, Peterson denied MIAC-leading goal scorer Ashley St. Aubin of a goal before making a sliding stop eight yards out from net five minutes later.

A free kick from 32 yards out by Augsburg with under 10 to play made its way through the Bethel four person wall before Peterson pushed it away from the bottom corner. Two minutes later, Augsburg's last good look came off a corner kick when the shot hit the crossbar and came right down to Peterson.
