Royals Battle to Scoreless Draw with Augsburg

ARDEN HILLS, Minn. – On a picture perfect fall Saturday afternoon, the Bethel University men's soccer team battled to a double-overtime scoreless draw with Augsburg at Ona Orth Athletic Complex. It was the Royals second overtime match within a three-game span and the first of the year to reach double overtime.

During halftime of the match the Royals honored three seniors in Connor Nelson, Reed Kaper and Brandon Martinez-Luhman for their time and dedication to the program.

Recording its first tie of the season, Bethel moves to 6-8-1 on the year and 1-6-1 in MIAC play.  BU will have its final road match of the season at St. Olaf next Saturday at 1 p.m.

In what was an evenly played 110 minutes, Augsburg out shot the Royals 19-15 while Bethel held the edge in shots on goal 7-6.

The Bethel defense held strong on the Auggies set pieces which included five corner kicks. Colin Hupert was a stone wall collecting three saves in each half for a total of six.

Augsburg tested Hupert right off the bat until the Bethel 's offense found its stride late in the first. Chances continued to arise in the second as Connor Nelson had a good look that missed the frame in the 88th minute. TJ Frantz had the only shot of OT that was saved by the Augsburg keeper.

In the double OT, Augsburg had the only shot but it deflected off the left post in the 109th minute as the teams settled for a tie.
