ST. PETER, Minn. – For the first time this season the Bethel University women's soccer team was kept off the scoreboard falling to Gustavus Adolphus College 1-0 Tuesday afternoon on the road. A barrage of shots on target never found the back of the net for BU while the Gusties connected on their only shot on goal in the second half.
Falling to 10-3 on the year and 4-3 in MIAC play, the Royals look to regroup before hosting current conference leading Augsburg on Saturday. Start time is set for 3:30 p.m. at Ona Orth Athletic Complex.
The host Gusites put Bethel's chance at a program-record 10th shutout on hold breaking the scoreless tie in the 60th minute. A pass from the center of the pitch out wide allowed the Gusties to create space forcing the BU defense to spread out. After getting past a defender, Gustavus' Katie Ashpole put some wicked bend on a shot from just inside the corner of the box sailing it over everyone's head to the upper 90 on the far side.
Opportunities were there for the Royals who outshot Gustavus 14-6 and 9-3 in the shots on goal battle. Bethel had chances in the final three minutes with three straight corner kicks. Being centimeters away from tying it was
Sophie Kendall who tried to chip in a shot from 11 yards out but the GAC goalkeeper got up high enough pushing it up and off the cross bar.
Kendall and
Claire Radatz combined to take seven of Bethel's nine shots on goal.
