ST. JOSEPH, Minn. - The Bethel University women's soccer team traveled up Interstate 94 for a Saturday afternoon contest with the Bennies of Saint Benedict and came away with a 2-2 tie in double overtime. Both teams scored one goal each half with Saint Ben's holding a lead early in the first period and the Royals holding a short lead in the second period but neither team could get the game winner in. Bethel outshot CSB for the game 21-19 but the Bennies held a slight advantage in shots on goal at 14-11.
Saint Benedict scored the games first goal in the sixth minute to go up 1-0 early on. The Royals answered with a score by freshman
Lauren Davis off a pass from
Maggie Sipe. Early in the second half Sipe then gave Bethel their lead with her sixth goal of the week as she has totaled 13 points in the Royals last three games. The lead did not last long unfortunately for Bethel as just 49 seconds later the Bennies tied the game back up which is where it would remain despite 57 more minutes of play between regulation and two overtimes.
Bethel now stands at 8-2-1 overall and 3-1-1 in the MIAC while Saint Ben's is 3-5-1 and 2-2-1. The Royals will resume action next Saturday morning with a 11:30 a.m. match with Gustavus to kickoff the Homecoming action for the day at Bethel.
