ARDEN HILLS, Minn. - The Bethel University women's soccer team engaged in an exciting shootout with Gustavus on Homecoming Saturday morning, coming out with a 4-3 victory. The scoring started early and often and finished with the Royals game winner with just 4:40 left in regulation to break a 3-3 tie. The two teams combined for 15 shots on goal in the game, with seven of those finding the back of the net.
Gustavus scored the games first goal just 3:46 into the game to take an early lead. Bethel and
Brooke Ogne tied things up just seven minutes later off an assist from
Maggie Sipe. In the 15th minute, Sipe setup
Britney Monteon to give the Royals the 2-1 lead. But again, the early scoring was not done as the Gusties answered back in the 19th minute to tie the game back up. The scoring would end for the rest of the half however, and the game would stay at 2-2 until freshman
Rachel Waterman put Bethel back on top in the 55th minute off an assist from Monteon. The Gusties again responded with a goal in the 67th minute to retie the score at 3-3. Waterman was able to setup Monteon for the game winner in the 85th minute as the Royals took the MIAC match by a 4-3 score.
The win improves Bethel to 9-2-1 on the season and 4-1-1 in the MIAC as they sit in second place behind unbeaten St. Thomas. Next up for Bethel is a trip to Hamline on Tuesday afternoon, October 9th at 4 p.m.
